How do we tend to ourselves and others? How can we be kind to ourselves and create healthy boundaries?

I’m trying to explore how Black women become their own support system along with their family and friends. We become this network of care for each other to nurture our own growth, time, and wellness. We and our ancestors have braided hair, laughed, stitched quilts, cried, composed songs, screamed, lit candles and spilled the tea to move through the endless cycles of joy and burnout.

Working with the repetition engineered in the threading of a jacquard loom, I want to try to reflect the repetitive routine of how as a Black woman, I am constantly thinking, reassessing, chanting, reassuring, depending on the place or day of the week it is.

The Warp Lounge creates optical stimulation with layers of transparency. Two layers of hand-woven fabric—comprised of a nylon warp and a plastic lanyard and monofilament weft—hold molded silicone pads to a bent acrylic frame. Its iridescence comes from the lanyard yarn, which hangs below the frame in an extended, undulating selvage. Projecting the color of the fabric to the edges of the acrylic sheet creates a constantly shifting visual distortion.
